An AACRC Webinar entitled, “Shall We Dance: Embracing and Managing Countertransference within the Milieu” is scheduled for March 13 from 9-11 a.m. PDT.

Countertransference is a term familiar to clinicians and relates to the feelings and emotional behaviors of the therapist, residential counselor, case manager and others in residential roles in reaction to the emotions, experiences or problems of client children, youth and their family members.

Working with young people who have histories of complex trauma can elicit intense thoughts, emotions, body sensations and behaviors. It is essential, therefore, to create an environment that promotes mindfulness and self-reflection skills in order to help prepare staff for interactions that occur in the context of their roles and which directly impact the overall treatment of youth and their families.

This webinar will provide information on how to manage countertransference within the milieu through building, tracking, mindfulness and self-reflection skills.

The discussion will: 1) provide an understanding of transference/countertransference and what this process can look like within the context of a residential treatment unit; 2) address the implications of countertransference as it relates specifically to our client’s treatment; and 3) provide tools and practice for staff to remain grounded in their residential treatment role rather than moving into a player in the countertransference/transference dance with clients and other staff.
