Minding the Future: A report on workforce challenges in youth behavioral health

The CA Alliance and the Catalyst Center are pleased to present a report on the workforce challenges in youth behavioral health.

California’s community-based nonprofit behavioral health providers are facing a dire workforce crisis which is rapidly diminishing their ability to provide adequate services to children and youth. Providers are reporting unprecedented job vacancy levels of 30-40% that were spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic. Just as we are working to combat the impact on children’s and youth’s mental health, we are faced with the most severe staffing shortages in a century.

However, we believe that there are opportunities to strengthen our workforce pipeline, create more innovative and accessible education pathways, and pursue policy and regulatory avenues.

We have identified strategies and recommendations to address the current crisis effectively in this report, and we look forward to working on solutions together.
